Industry Trend Analysis - Visualising Our Key Industry Themes - OCT 2017

BMI View: When discussing industry themes, connecting the cross-sector impacts is the ultimate challenge for both us and our clients. As a result, we have created the following diagram to illustrate how some of our most important cross-industry trends interact with one another. We have focussed on trends that we expect to play out over a three-to-ten-year horizon.

Internet of Things - The coming impact of the 'Internet of Things' (IoT) on industry is constantly debated by our analysts and the conclusions pervade our industry research. In short, we believe that although expectations for the transformative impact of IoT on industry over next five years are overblown, the longer-term potential is still underappreciated. Corporate investment to embrace IoT surged over 2015-2016 and we expect this trend to continue over the coming years. The three types of firms most impacted will be corporate adopters (incumbent firms acquiring or developing in-house IoT expertise), new disruptive industry entrants (due to lower barriers to entry in a host of industries from utilities to autos) and IoT technology providers (there will be increased focus on IoT provision from existing technology and machinery providers such as Honeywell, IBM and Siemens, as well as newer entrants to this space such as Alphabet, Amazon and Apple).
