Softbank Mobile, Japan's third largest mobile operator, will offer its customers free femtocells and ADSL broadband connections. The initiative is clearly aimed at ensuring continued growth in subscriber uptake amid market saturation, as well as freeing up network capacity and resources by moving bandwidth-heavy data traffic off the core mobile network. However, BMI sees this move as a fundamental shift in the business models for both femtocells and multi-play services, which could have a far-reaching impact on the wider Japanese telecoms market.
