Zain has become the latest in a long line of telecoms investors queuing up to take advantage of opportunities in Syria. According to cellular-news, the Kuwait-based group is interested in investing in Syria's mobile market, either through taking a stake in an existing operator or by acquiring a new operating licence. This is all very well, but BMI is well aware that it is not necessarily the case that a new operating licence is about to be offered, or that a stake in one of the existing operators is going to be up for grabs. Add to this that the situation with Zain's own ownership structure and investors remains rather up in the air, and this statement of intention should perhaps be treated with some scepticism.
