China Telecom has completed a CDMA network equipment tender valued at CNY27.9bn (US$4bn). The fixed-line operator is to take over the CDMA operating unit of China Unicom, the country's second-ranked mobile operator, as part of an industry-wide restructuring initiative directed at ensuring greater equality and competition. Demand for CDMA-based mobile services is limited with a 7.4% share of the market in June 2008, compared to the previous year at 8.1%. Despite this, the operator remains committed to extending and upgrading China Unicom's CDMA network.
