Brazil's largest city is set to see a new mobile operator in September, after Unicel launched a test period with 10,000 subscribers in São Paulo. The company will operate under the brand aeiou, with an investment of BRL250mn (US$158.8mn) for its initial roll out. The company was the only bidder for the wireless spectrum auctioned by Anatel in February 2008, and paid BRL93.8mn for its spectrum. The company is 51% owned by local entrepreneur José Roberto Melo da Silva, with the remaining 49% acquired by Kuwait-based operator Hits Telecom in April for an undisclosed sum.
