Pan-Caribbean mobile operator Digicel has confirmed that it is interested in the Costa Rican mobile market. The operator has expanded its presence into Central American markets in the past couple of years, winning licences in Honduras and Panama and acquiring El Salvador's Digicel Holdings Ltd, which also holds an operating licence for Guatemala, in September 2006. As markets reach saturation in the Caribbean, Digicel has looked for alternative markets for future growth, setting its sights on Central America, where penetration rates are generally lower. The interest in Costa Rica comes as a new general telecommunications law is approved by the Costa Rican government, opening the sector to competition.
