US mobile equipment manufacturer Motorola has gained a GSM expansion contract from Vietnam's Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT). VNPT operates mobile services as VinaPhone in the country and was the third largest operator at the end of 2007. The contract, worth US$28mn, will see VinaPhone's GSM network expanded to 12 Northern provinces in Vietnam, expanding its existing coverage of 64 provinces and cities. Additionally, the two companies are working together to expand GPRS coverage and deploying EDGE services across the country.
