Kuwait-based Zain plans to bid for South Africa's fourth mobile phone licence next year and is looking to make three or four purchases of existing operators elsewhere on the African continent over the next 12 months. The company seeks to become a major global player by 2011, and increased coverage of Africa - especially in the region's second-largest market - will help it to achieve this goal.
