Russia's second largest mobile network operator, VimpelCom, has reported an 117% increase in net profits, to US$601mn, on the back of a 6.5mn annual increase in active subscriber numbers and the purchase of fixed-line and broadband operator Golden Telecom in February 2008. The company has since agreed to purchase the shares it does not already own of regional fixed-line and broadband operator Corbina Telecom, and is considering making a bid for Iran's third national cellular licence.
