India's mobile operators reported 6.14mn net gains to the country's GSM network in the month of April, according to the Cellular Operators Association of India. The results combined the subscriber figures of India's nine GSM networks totalling 198.8mn, but did not include Reliance Communications' net additions. The operator, which mainly provides services on CDMA but has some GSM subscribers, has yet to release its results. At the end of April, it announced its intentions to deploy a national GSM network by YE08. Impressive growth in the GSM market has led to operators raising their network expansion commitments. Bharti Airtel, the GSM market leader, with 2.4mn net additions reported in April 2008, had earlier awarded a US$900mn contract to Nokia Siemens Network to expand its GSM network in eight circles.
