B-mobile, the mobile operating arm of incumbent Bhutan Telecom, has announced the commercial launch of its 3G network together with GPRS and EDGE services over its existing GSM network. This marks a significant step in the development of Bhutan's mobile industry. At the end of 2007, B-mobile, as the only mobile operator offering services in the country, had a subscriber base of 145,000, reflecting a penetration rate of 6.3%. However, for the first time in April 2008, it was faced with competition following the award of a second mobile licence to Tashi Infocomm.
