Venezuelan state-owned mobile operator Movilnet has announced that it has installed 600 GSM base stations in preparation for its GSM network launch, set for May 2008. The operator, owned by CANTV, will run the new network alongside its existing CDMA-based services which it intends to continue expanding. Movilnet is the last of Venezuela's mobile operators to launch a GSM network, after rival Movistar launched its own in January 2007. Smaller operator Digitel is currently the only GSM-only operator in the market.
