Reliance Communications, India's second largest mobile operator, is expected to launch a national GSM network by the end of the year, according to Cellular News. This is a significant development for the operator as it will be able to compete both in the CDMA and GSM mobile markets. Currently, Reliance's GSM services are confined to 340 towns within its eight circle footprint, while its CDMA equivalent covers around 65% of the country and is available in 19 states. In an effort to raise its GSM coverage in line with its CDMA services, the operator has been applying for a number of licences and radio spectrum.
