KDDI, Japan's third largest mobile operator, plans to adopt the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard, according to local press reports. This is the same next-generation technology that will be used by rivals NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Mobile, to be implemented in 2010. KDDI currently uses the CDMA2000 telecommunications format for its 3G services, compared to NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Mobile, both users of W-CDMA. The implementation of LTE means that KDDI could abandon its CDMA2000 network, following in the footsteps of US-based Verizon Wireless, which also relinquished its CDMA network.
