Telkom, South Africa's incumbent operator, has applied for a mobile operating licence on the 1800MHz band from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), according to local press reports. Telkom already retains a 50% share in Vodacom, the country's mobile market leader, as part of a joint venture with the UK's Vodafone Group, which holds the remainder.
