Televisa, Mexico's largest broadcaster and the largest producer of Spanish-language programming in the world, has said it intends to bid for a WiMAX licence in order to launch its own wireless network. The licence would help expand the company's existing broadband and telephony services, which it offers in triple-play packages, and would put the operator into direct competition with the country's largest broadband operator, Telmex. Televisa acquired a 51% stake in cable operator Cablevisión in 2007, as well as acquiring Bestel, a cable network operator.
