Motorola, the world's third largest mobile handset provider has opened an additional R&D facility in Wangjing, China. The centre, established in collaboration with the Chaoyang District Government of Beijing and Zhongguancun Electronic Zone Construction marks the vendor's awareness of the potential the Chinese mobile market has to offer. At the end of September 2007, there were 506mn mobile subscribers, and BMI would expect YE07 to close with 527.692mn subscribers, reflecting a penetration rate of 39.9%. The growth opportunity for handset sales therefore remains substantial, and which is proving vital to Motorola.
