The Ukrainian market has waited a long time for mobile 3G deployment. However, following the launch of alternative mobile operator Telesystems' PEOPLEnet brand earlier this year (it has about one million subscribers to its CDMA2000 EV-DO network), state-owned Ukrtelecom, the country's sole UMTS licence holder, has pledged to launch its W-CDMA network in November 2007. And what's more MTS has announced that it too will launch a 3G service from its CDMA2000 EV-DO standard. The Russian operator holds great faith in the future of 3G services - having won a licence in Russia recently, it expects that a third of all Russia's mobile subscribers will be using 3G platforms by the end of the decade. The operator also holds a 3G licence in Uzbekistan.
