Bahrain Telecommunications (Batelco) is to invest up to US$4bn on expanding its international presence. Competition from Zain in its home market has seen the Bahraini mobile market leader relinquish a large share of the net additions market to its rival. During 2006, Batelco accounted for just 37% of the 95,000 net additions reported during 2006. BMI is forecasting growth of 14% during this year to reach a little over 1mn, on account of penetration rates having surpassed 100% in early 2006, while it is expected that subsequent growth will continue to fall.
