Umniah Mobile Communications (UMC), the Jordanian mobile operator owned by Bahrain's Batelco has won a 3.5GHz broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) licence from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC). This is the third significant development for Batelco since it entered the Jordanian fixed-line market, prior to launching mobile services via the acquisition of a 96% stake in No3 operator UMC in June 2006, at a cost of US$415mn. The operator hopes that this latest addition to its Jordanian operations will enable it to improve its existing economies of scale.
