Just hours after EU regulators cleared the US$13.4bn merger between French equipment manufacturer Alcatel and USA's Lucent Technologies, Motorola signed a deal with China's Huawei Technologies to develop and market wireless network equipment based on GSM technology. The common thread to both deals, and indeed Nokia's recent joint venture with Siemens is Huawei Technologies. The massive strides that the company has made in its brief history have impacted on the world's largest telecoms network and equipment suppliers, and pushed several to merge and realign.
