Despite strong denials from SK Telecom (SKT), speculation is mounting that South Korea's largest mobile operator is planning to acquire a 10% stake in China's No 2 mobile operator China Unicom, which has in total 132.7mn subscribers, as of April 2006. According to a the UK business paper, Financial Times, SKT is now in the process of hiring advisers for an investment of US$1.1bn, which could even happen this year.
