Incumbent operator Omantel could soon be joined by a second national fixed line operator, according to the country's minister for transport and telecommunications Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Harthy. Over the first two months of 2006, regulatory body, the TRA, reported an increase of just 1.5%, with net additions of 4,033 users to 269,270 users, accounting for penetration rates of around 9%. Growth for the rest of the year is similarly not expected to rise significantly, with annual growth of 9.4% to 290,000 users.
