US-based data centre provider Equinix has agreed to buy the assets of Hong Kong-based peer Asia Tone for approximately US$230.5mn. The deal, which adds five data centres and a disaster recovery centre to Equinix's Asian footprint, underscores the fast-growing importance of Asia as an emerging hub for data storage and processing. It follows similar Asia-focused expansion strategies of rivals such as Google and NTT Data and, crucially, gives Equinix a foothold in China, where a growing number of multinational corporations are generating higher volumes of 'big data' traffic.
