Oi Vey! Telemar's Price Falls With Declining Market Share

Telemar Norte Leste, which operates in Brazil under the name Oi, is losing market share to rivals in the wireless market, causing its share price to drop. The last of the major four operators in Brazil to offer 3G, the firm is at a significant disadvantage relative to market leaders. Bearing this in mind, Oi criticised the decision by the Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações (Anatel) to prioritise new entrants in its recently announced plan to auction the H-Band spectrum, excluding it from bidding for what it considers a vital need. While its points are valid, BMI doubts Anatel will waver on its position, since increasing competition beyond the big four of Oi, Vivo (Telefónica), TIM Brasil (Telecom Italy), and Claro (América Móvil) is a central goal of the regulator.
