Chile And Peru Investing In Rural Broadband
September 2010 | Daily AlertThe Chilean president, Sebastián Piñera, has inaugurated the long-anticipated first phase of the country's Red de Internet Rural: Todo Chile Comunicado (Rural Internet Network: All of Chile Connected) programme, which aims to bring mobile broadband access to nearly 1,500 rural communities. The project is a joint effort by national government and local government and telecoms giant Entel. BMI welcomes the launch, particularly since the government's commitment to the project had been questioned as a result of competing infrastructure demands. We are also encouraged by other government initiatives in the region, notably in Peru, that highlight the priority given to telecoms access, particularly for rural populations.
