Kyrgyztelecom Back In Government Hands

Kyrgyzstan's interim government, led by Roza Otunbayeva, has reversed a number of decisions made by the ousted government of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, including the privatisation of incumbent telecoms operator Kyrgyztelecom. The new government claims that the state's stake in the company had been sold to a consortium of four investors with close ties to Bakiyev at 'unreasonably low prices'. BMI's had previously highlighted concerns over a lack of transparency in the privatisation process and the winning consortium's inexperience in telecoms operations.
