Svyazinvest Takes Major Step Into Wireless Market With 4G Licences
March 2010 | Company News AlertIncumbent long-distance operator Rostelecom (RT) has been awarded 4G wireless network licences covering one-third of the Russian population, according to Reuters. RT, a subsidiary of state-owned telecoms group Svyazinvest, won licences to operate in 38 of the 40 Russian regions auctioned. Another Svyazinvest subsidiary, Sibirtelecom, won a licence for the Tomsk area and local operator Vainakh Telecom claimed a licence covering Chechnya. BMI expects the 4G licences to boost Svyazinvest's bid to increase its footprint in Russia's wireless market.
