US Hoping To Increase Internet Freedom In Sudan And Elsewhere
March 2010 | Industry NewsUS trade sanctions on Cuba, Iran and Sudan have been eased by the Treasury Department. The move will allow US firms to export services related to web browsing, instant messaging, social networking and content sharing, among others. It also allows software exports to both Iran and Sudan, although not to Cuba. The move is designed to promote internet freedom in these countries, and comes at the same time as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is pushing governments in East Africa to do more to promote internet access.
