2009 has been a trying year for most industries. Across the Middle East and Africa, mobile networks in particular have been beset by falling ARPUs, already a natural consequence of growing competition, encouraged by declining consumer confidence. In several cases the first part of the year saw a slump in growth, and even some contractions. Meanwhile, conditions have not been easy for the operators, with tightened credit markets making many cautious.
