While BMI maintains the position that the negotiations for the MTN-Bharti merger are likely to fail, the prolonged and repeated effort that has gone into trying to make this deal happen indicates, among other things, how much Bharti wants in on African telecoms. Now there are also reports that Reliance has confirmed that it is one of three parties starting negotiations with Zain over the possible purchase of its African networks. With Essar also looking to increase its presence in Africa, through a possible tie-up with Warid, it would seem that Indian influence in African telecoms has never been higher.
