Damage To Telecoms Networks In Gaza Amounts To US$10mn, Says CEO

January 2009 | Industry News

The CEO of the Palestine Telecommunications Company (Paltel), Abdul-Malik al-Jabar, has estimated that damage caused to the company's fixed-line and mobile networks in the Gaza strip during the Israeli assault on the territory amounts to US$10mn, reports Globes Online. Al-Jabar claims that five of the company's employees were killed during the conflict, and that extensive damage has been done to infrastructure, with many cell sites and sections of the switching network completely destroyed. Al-Jabar said that Paltel has joined the Palestinian Authority in requesting that Israel open the borders to allow the company to bring in spare parts to begin repairs and get some semblance of a network running again as soon as possible.
