Bharti To Launch 2G and 3G Networks

India's Bharti Airtel has announced that it will leverage the expertise of Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) to deploy 3G services alongside its 2G network across Sri Lanka. The operator is 30% owned by SingTel and acquired Sri Lanka's fifth mobile licence last year. With an investment fund of LKR8bn to be spent over a period of five years, the bulk will be used to deploy a national mobile network in the country. A further LKR6bn has been awarded to Chinese telecoms equipment vendor Huawei Technologies under a three-year deal that will include telecoms applications and software.
