Smartphone Soars, China Counts 400,000 iPhones

February 2008 | Company News Alert

China Mobile could see the number of unlocked Apple iPhone handsets on its network rise substantially if the two companies were to enter into an agreement. According to figures supplied by the country's mobile market leader and cited by In-Stat, there are currently over 400,000 unlocked iPhones on its network. This equates to nearly half of the handsets sold by Apple, which have not been connected to one of its official network partners. The reluctance on the part of China Mobile to become a network partner is due to Apple's request for a 20% to 30% share of China Mobile's user fees from future iPhone users. At present, the mobile operator retains all revenue from any multimedia sale it makes over its network.
