Demand For Greater Bandwidth Soars, As PCCW Launches Bundles

PCCW-HKT, Hong Kong's largest fixed-line and broadband service provider is reported to have two-thirds of all households based in the Special Administration Region (SAR) subscribing to its direct fibre-optic broadband access service. Household subscribers retain the largest share at 91% of total registered broadband accounts; 1.861mn reported as of September 2007. As the sector reaches maturity across Hong Kong, the number of households subscribing to broadband services is slowing down, with 2004 reporting growth of 20.8% y-o-y, followed by 2005 on 10.2% y-o-y and 2006 with 5.3% y-o-y. However, PCCW has managed to announce above market average growth rates, its broadband access lines grew by 19.7% y-o-y in 2005, followed by a further increase of 23.4% during 2006, taking its total to 952,000 lines; a figure which rose to just over 1mn by June 2007.
