PCCW Extends 3G Operation

October 2007 | Company News Alert

Hong Kong's Office of Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) has announced that PCCW has won the state's fifth 3G licence. It was the only company to take part in the bidding, and by doing so becomes the only operator in Hong Kong to deploy both GSM-based W-CDMA and CDMA2000 networks. Indeed, via its interest in Sunday Communications in which it has majority control, PCCW already has a 3G licence, and at the end of 2006, had about 115,000 subscribers and a 9% market share. PCCW has paid HKD76mn for its licence, and will hold a 15-year licence starting from the end of November 2008.
