Colombia To Gain From Global Internet Connectivity

Colombia's Telefónica Telecom continues with efforts to raise the country's broadband penetration, one of the lowest in Latin America. A key reason why the government allowed Spain-based Telefónica to acquire a 50% plus one share in Colombia Telecom to become known as Telefónica Telecom in April 2006 was that the operator promised to raise broadband penetration in the country. The operator's latest commitment is to invest US$35mn in an undersea cable project helping to raise broadband capacity by as much as 40%, with work expected to begin in December 2007.
