Operators Asked To Cough Up For Licence Extensions
May 2007 | Industry NewsAccording to local media reports, Hungary's Economy Ministry is seeking HUF10bn (around US$55mn) each from the country's two leading mobile operators - T-Mobile Hungary and Pannon - for an extension to their operating licences. The two operators were awarded their licences in 1993 for a 15-year period, which expires in November 2008. The licences include an option for a 7.5 year extension, and the Ministry is required to quote a price at least 18 months before the original expiry date. The extensions are due to be signed by early August this year. However, should the Ministry and the operators fail to come to an agreement, the national regulator (NHH) can offer the concessions to other bidders at an open auction.
