Movistar Raises Commitment In Venezuela

Movistar, the Telefónica Moviles-owned Venezuelan telecoms unit is to raise the number of GSM base stations (BSTs) in the country by a further 50% this year, which would lead to 1,200 BSTs by the end of 2007. This follows the operator's launch of its GSM network, beginning in January 2007, for which it had already spent US$200mn in backup infrastructure for the company's network.
