Batelco To Boost Bahrain's 3G Market Choice

The Bahrain mobile market, through its No2 mobile operator MTC-Vodafone became the first in the region to commercially launch 3G services in 2003. However, despite this head start, the sector has not seen overtly strong demand for its NGN offering. BMI estimates that by YE05, MTC-Vodafone had managed to attain a 3G subscriber base of some 10,000 users, and expects a further13,000 users during 2006. By YE06, we expect just 2.5% of total mobile users will be subscribed to 3G services, illustrating consumer unwillingness to migrate to 3G services, even though mobile penetration rates are in excess of 100%.
