Anatel To Begin Round Of 2G, 3G Auctions

Brazil's telecoms regulator Anatel is keen to capitalise on the country's growing mobile market by auctioning additional licences. The market, which grew by 31.4% in 2005, and is expected to grow by a further 14.3% to attain a penetration rate of 53% by end 2006, according to BMI forecasts, already has six major operators, in addition to a few other minor companies. However, most of the larger operators cater services to the main cities in the country, such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, thus ignoring rural areas. This has led to the country attaining a lower penetration rate
