TeliaSonera Wins Latvian Mobile Operator But Denied Control of Incumbent

May 2006 | Company Finance Alert

TeliaSonera, the Swedish-Finnsh telecoms operator, has succeeded in its bid to win complete control of Latvian mobile operator LMT. However, the Latvian government has blocked any attempts by TeliaSonera to increase its stake in incumbent fixed-line operator Lattelekom. Government officials have made it clear that they will not allow a single foreign investor to control both companies. 'Let it be fully clear to both Swedes and Latvians. The answer is an absolute, crystal-clear 'no'. They won't get Lattelekom', said Economy Minister Aigars Stokenbergs, according to local press reports.
