French 3G Services Taking Off

The French telecoms regulator, ARCEP, has published a report on how well mobile operators are sticking to their rollout obligations for 3G services. The country's two largest mobile operators - Orange and SFR - received UMTS licences in 2001, while third-ranked operator Bouygues Telecom obtained a licence in September 2002. However, in March 2004 ARCEP acknowledged the significant gap between its original forecasts for 3G rollout and the 'technical and economic reality' of the 3G market. As a result, it revised the coverage and commercial launch obligations for both Orange and SFR.
