TeliaSonera Makes Defensive Infrastructure Acquisitions

Following the de-merger of KCell from Kazakh wireline incumbent Kazakhtelecom, TeliaSonera has entered into a conditional agreement to acquire WiMAX operator Alem Communications. Additionally, KCell signed a five-year lease agreement with KazTransCom for backbone capacity - following TeliaSonera's indirect minority investment in the fibre operator. BMI believes TeliaSonera's investment in strategic infrastructure is a positive development for the operator as growth in Kazakhstan's telecoms markets becomes increasingly wireless data centric and Kazakhtelecom becomes a competitive threat.
