Can Data Still Be The Saviour Or Has The Bubble Burst?

Like a number of European markets, in Portugal regulatory measures to cut mobile termination rates (MTRs) put downward pressure on operators' mobile revenues. Adding to this pressure is the macroeconomic environment, with high unemployment and stagnant incomes. In this environment data and value-added service revenues have become increasingly important to operators' financial performance. However, in 2011 there were signs of a slowdown in the wireless broadband market in Portugal. BMI expects the launch of LTE by three operators in March 2012 to boost growth and we consider there to be a number of additional opportunities for operators to supplement core mobile voice revenues and consumer wireless data services, notably in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.
