Russian Operators Head East

May 2012 | Company News Alert

Russia's four largest telecoms operators MTS, VimpelCom, MegaFon and Rostelecom will partner to build an 8Tbps submarine cable to connect Russia's Far East region with Sakhalin Island. The cable will cost RUB2.4bn (US$77mn) and will reach approximately 2,000km. The companies aim to complete the cable within two years as operations begin to extract the lucrative oil and gas reserves around Sakhalin Island. The development of the submarine cable will aid Russian development of its Far East region and be a boost to companies moving to the region to exploit the country's oil and gas reserves.
