BNDES To Fund 4G Equipment

Brazil's National Development Bank (BNDES) will provide loans and credit lines to local manufacturers for the development and supply of LTE equipment. The auction of spectrum for LTE roll-outs is controversial in Brazil, with requirements for equipment to be locally manufactured. The European Union and the US have questioned the decision under WTO rules, but BMI believes, if the requirement is pushed through, Brazil's telecoms equipment manufacturing development would grow quickly. Nevertheless, with more limited scale, using equipment from local manufacturers may prove more expensive for Brazil's mobile operators.
