Mobile network operators in the US are caught in a honey trap of their own making as the costs of building out next generation mobile broadband networks and subsidising the expensive smartphones and tablets needed to help consumers make the most of these powerful new platforms are weighing on their profits. Yet, without the lure of highly desirable devices such as the Apple iPhone, operators would struggle to find new customers and retain existing users as well as encouraging them to use more lucrative non-voice services.
