LTE Spectrum Auctions To Proceed In June Despite Operators' Opposition

Brazil's telecoms regulator, Agencia Nacional de Telecommunicacoes (Anatel), intends to proceed with plans to auction 4G LTE spectrum from June 10 2012 as previously announced, despite continuing opposition from some of the country's biggest mobile service providers. The government is keen to ensure there is sufficient broadband capacity to meet the expected surge in demand for data services during three major sporting events the country is hosting between 2013 and 2016. However, the government's urgency is not shared by the operators, who believe the rush to deploy the LTE technology may have a negative impact on competition, considering their investments in 3G/HSPA network services.
