The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed more than 2.5mn Muslim pilgrims for the 2011 Hajj, three-quarters of which came from other countries. The sheer number of visitors to the annual pilgrimage has significant implications for different sectors of the Saudi economy. One of those sectors is telecoms. Some of the Kingdom's biggest telecoms service providers recorded huge increases in voice and data traffic for the 2011 Hajj compared to the previous year.
